  • Tia Brown is a proud native of the Austin neighborhood, and she and her husband hoped to return. But the rising cost of housing there put their dream out of reach. After being rejected by a South Side landlord because of their race, the family landed in West Englewood, where their young kids have witnessed violence. Will the family ever find the right home?

    About FIRSTHAND: Segregation
    ----------
Chicago is one of the most segregated big cities in America, and it comes at a cost. The Metropolitan Planning Council found that segregation costs the region $4.4 billion in lost income, 83,000 fewer bachelor’s degrees, and about 200 lives cut short by homicides every year. In FIRSTHAND: SEGREGATION, WTTW explores the impact racial divisions have on individuals, the city, and our region with a documentary series, reported stories, expert talks, and community discussions.
FIRSTHAND: SEGREGATION is part of the award-winning FIRSTHAND multiplatform, multi-year initiative focusing on the firsthand perspectives of people facing critical issues in Chicago.

The racist who didn’t pick up their calls needs to lose his job and pay damages to the family.

Consider it a blessing if the racist man denying you to buy that house. It probably had bad spirits.

I thought housing discrimination was illegal? How can they be turned away by race if the Fair Housing law exists. Sounds like they need to file a complaint. It’s a hassle but that’s how people continue to get away with their behavior.
On another note, I’m in a “good” neighborhood but my kids will never be outside alone while I’m cooking. There’s still issues with s3x trafficking in non violent neighborhoods. Google who lives around you and watch all the s3x offenders pop up.

Oh my goodness you sound so sweet. Redlining is the history of America. Talk to the Japanese. Talk to the African-Americans in the Jim Crow era of the Evil South. OH, THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WERE REDLINED ALMOST TILL EXTINCTION. STAY WOKE SUGAR

Our family keeps to ourselves and we don’t speak to or interact with any of our neighbors and the feeling is definitely mutual.

I would be squatting and then let him take me to court so I can go to court with him to say how he discriminated against us.
